Welcome to Year 3

Please read the information below to find out about Year 3.

Even more book trailers!

The children have absolutely loved producing their own book trailers this half term! This week the children continued working on their own trailers using iMoive and were able to add their own pictures, videos, sound effects, backgrounds and text. They have done a fantastic job and here are a few they'd like to share.

Book Trailers

This half term, we are learning about how to create and edit book trailers. The children produced some excellent work this afternoon, they used photos and videos they had taken in the pervious lesson to produce their own trailer. Have are a few examples. I can't wait to see next weeks trailers!

King's Coronation Celebrations

The children have enjoyed every minute of the celebrations today. This morning we took part in an assembly all about the king and what happens at a coronation. We then continued this in to our comprehension lesson and in the afternoon the children made a portrait of the king. The children worked as a whole class, focusing on different sections of the portrait and then at the end of the lesson we put the pieces together to see what we had made. The children were very proud of the finally piece and so they should be!

DT

We have continued to think about eating seasonally in our DT. We found out about the different fruit and vegetables which are grown in the UK, in different seasons of the our year.
We looked particularly at spring vegetables and chose three to make into a vegetable tart. Practising our chopping skills was really tricky but we did a great job. Our tarts looked very tasty, as you can see, and we all enjoyed trying some new foods.

Science Week

This year Science Week was all about connections to nature. As a school, we focussed on worms! We found out lots of new facts about worms. We also joined our school worm charming competition to see from which part of the field we could collect the most worms. We had a fun, muddy time in our section, connecting with nature and charmed 25 worms!

World Book Day

We all had a great day celebrating World Book Day. We took part in a Dance workshop where we became rebellious school children. This was based on the book Matilda by Roald Dahl. Then we shared our amazing World Book Day creations and voted for our favourite.

DT

Our first DT topic this half term is all about food and ‘Eating Seasonally’. We talked about how supermarkets provide us with food from all over the world - which we couldn’t grow well in the UK. We practised our chopping skills and made a fruit skewer from foods found in tropical areas of the world. We enjoyed trying the tasty fruits.

Spring 1

Art

We finished our ‘Painting with Scissors’ Art unit by adding stencilled and painted details to our collage work based on Girls on the Bridge by Edvard Munch. We really enjoyed responding to the artwork in our own way and we’re very proud of our finished work.

Computing

Today was our last lesson on programming Scratch and the children used an algorithm to program their own game. Everyone did a fantastic job, here are a few examples.

Literacy

In literacy, we have been looking at poems which are written using free verse. We practiced performing them and looked closely at how they were written. We read a poem called Wide Open by Rachel Rooney about a magic eye. We used free verse to write our own amazing poems about a magic ear. Have a look at all our wonderful imagery.

Computing

This half term, the children are really enjoying learning how to program their own algorithms using Scratch. This afternoon the children learnt to use decomposition and have remixed an animation. Here are a few examples.

RE

In RE, we are learning about important parts of the Jewish religion. We found out about how important Moses is to the Jewish people. We freeze framed the different parts of the story of his life.

Geography

We are learning all about Italy in our Geography lessons. We began by learning about the physical geography of the country. Then we found out that Italy has a number of volcanoes so we discovered how they work.

We worked together to create Mount Etna, Mount Vesuvius and Mount Stromboli.

Watch as our volcanoes erupted- it was very exciting!

Art

Our Art lessons this half term are all linked to painting. We began by looking at a painting by Edvard Munch called Girls on the Bridge. We talked about the shapes and colours we could see in the painting and how we felt about it. In our sketchbooks, we used different art media to try and recreate different parts of the painting.

Autumn 2

RE

Close to Christmas, our RE lessons were all about Advent. We discussed the main parts of the Nativity Story and then created a joint Advent calendar of pictures to show the story.

DT

Our DT lessons were all about pneumatic systems. We investigated how they worked and then designed and made our own moving toys. We worked brilliantly and showed lots of resilience when things didn’t, at first, go to plan.

Take a look as we make our toys move!

Science

During our Light topic, we went outside on a sunny day to find out about shadows. We talked about what a shadow is and what causes them. We also thought about where our shadow was compared to where the sun was.

Reindeer Run and Christmas Jumper Day

Today, the children have enjoyed taking part in the reindeer run to support Wakefield Hospice. They all gave it their all and ran for as long as they could. I'm not sure who was the most worn out by the end!

French
In French, we were learning to talk about colours, shapes and sizes. We used our knowledge to ask for the shapes we needed to create animal shape pictures based on the work of the French artist, Matisse. Can you guess the animals?

Science

We tested materials to see how well we could see through them. Then we decided whether they were transparent, translucent or opaque.

History

Our history topic this term is ‘The Romans’. We used the internet to find out out about the uniform and equipment of the soldiers in the Roman Army. Then we used PicCollage to turn ourselves into soldiers! We labelled the items we were wearing. Take a look at some of our diagrams.

Science

As part of our new Science topic, Light, we investigated how well different materials reflected light. We shone our torch towards different materials and looked to see which ones lit up the white paper surrounding our light source. We were all able to spot the best reflectors.

Autumn 1

Computing

The children are really enjoying learning about the different parts of a computer and how computers work. So far we have looked at inputs and outputs and how information is sent between them.

This week the children looked at the different parts inside a computer and learnt what each of them do.

Science

We began our science topic 'Forces' by investigating pushes and pulls.

Art

In Art, we began experimenting with charcoal. We tested out different ways of using it to create dark and light. Then we produced some work in the style of artists from the Stone Age.

RE

In RE, we have been learning about the importance of the Bible to Christians. Reverend Sharon came to talk to us about how the Bible helps her to live a good life.

Science

In groups, we used protractors to investigate the best surfaces for moving an object. We worked out what we needed to look for to see which surface was the most effective.

French

We have been learning how to greet each other in French.

Science

We began to look at magnetic forces. We explored how magnetic forces can work at a distance.
